Distant past

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Distant Past is a rock band from the Freiburg / Bern ( Switzerland ) area with influences from progressive hard rock and heavy metal . It was founded by Adriano Troiano in 2002. In 2014 the band released their second album Utopian Void with the new singer Jvo Julmy.

history

Distant Past was founded in 2002 by Adriano Troiano as a pure studio project. Due to the renovation of his home, appropriate studio space was planned and completed in 2005. Troiano was a member of the heavy metal band Emerald and left it in 2001 to form Evil Eye with Alain Curty. Unfortunately the band did not develop as expected and Troiano decided to continue with Distant Past as a pure studio project. The second demo, Extraordinary Indication of Unnatural Perception, featured guest appearances by Emerald musicians Michael and Thomas Vaucher . In 2006 he went back to Emerald, as efforts to form a band failed because of the lack of a suitable singer.

2010 saw the release of the album Alpha Draconis , the band's first full-length album with singer Angelo Schafer ( Remote Lane ). The album was heavily progressive and received positive feedback. When Emerald singer Jvo Julmy left the band in 2009, it wasn't a year before a collaboration with Troiano came about. The first online single with Julmy, Touched by the Gods , was released in 2011 and was a tribute to Ronnie James Dio , who died in 2010 and whom Troiano had met a year earlier. The B-side of the Single Signs of the End was released on the Heavy Metal Nation Vol.8 sampler .

Then the band worked on the second album, which should be called Utopian Void . With more song input from guitarists Schafer and Curty, the album became the band's most successful, also thanks to the collaboration with Pure Steel Records . The two tracks from the online single are included as bonus tracks on the album. The idea to make a band out of the project arose from positive feedback.

None of the three drummers on Utopian Void wanted to join the newly formed troupe, so Geri Baeriswyl (formerly Anitras Garden ) got in touch and became the band's drummer from then on. The band rehearses in his rehearsal room because Troiano's studio had to be refurbished after a storm. So the work on the next long player was paused. The majority of the drum recordings were made by Al Spicher.

During the recording of the concept album Rise of the Fallen , the band broke up again, partly for health reasons, partly for ideological reasons. Nonetheless, the album was a complete success and earned the band numerous good reviews. Guests on the album are Thomas L. Winkler (who sings the part of the good; Jvo Julmy sings the part of the bad), David Luterbacher on the solo guitar and Geri Baeriswyl, who is only listed here as a guest.

style

Musically, the band is rooted in hard rock and heavy metal of the 1980s and 1990s. While the 2010 album Alpha Draconis still had some modern metal and progressive metal influences, the 2014 album Utopian Void is largely a melodic heavy metal album with influences from speed metal and thrash metal . Lyrically, many pieces deal with the mysteries of the universe, UFOs, mind control, the revelations of John, the Last Day, spirits and the like. Historical topics such as the First World War and the Roman Empire were also dealt with.

Troiano is fascinated by the biblical texts. The concept work "Rise of the Fallen" is a parable based on the temptation of Christ . In addition, the subjects of the flood , crucifixion and the stories about Lucifer's fall into hell . In addition to the Bible, there are also influences from the writings of John Milton , above all Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained.
