The Distelverein is a Lower Austrian nature conservation association to which numerous nature conservation initiatives can be traced back. The association is based in Deutsch-Wagram .

Origin and work

The thistle association was founded in 1987 on the March . The originally quarreling opponents from the farmers, the hunters and the conservationists founded a common platform. The sponsors of the newly founded association were the Lower Austrian State Chamber of Agriculture , the Lower Austrian State Hunting Association as an interest group of hunters, the Lower Austria Nature Conservation Association and the WWF Austria . The first chairman was the member of the National Council and farmer Hermann Schultes .

In contrast to the monocultures common in agriculture, the association developed an eco- land program , according to which the agricultural areas are to be interrupted by biotopes and field margins as a habitat for endangered plants and living beings.

As early as 1991, the association received the Binding Prize for nature and environmental protection for the preservation and promotion of the habitat east of Weinviertel / Marchfeld .

The association, which was originally limited to the March area, is active throughout the state. Since 1995, many suggestions of the Distelverein have been implemented in the Austrian Program for Environmentally Sound Agriculture (ÖPUL). Together with farmers and project communities, the Distelverein has also been developing nature conservation plans since 2000.

But for the March-Thaya Auen alone , the Distelverein developed the Ramsar concept on behalf of the Lower Austrian provincial government and the Ministry of Life . By working in this region, the Distelverein relies on intensive networking and cooperation with similar organizations in Slovakia and the Czech Republic in this cross-border region. The association has coordinated the Austrian Ramsar platform since 1995 and the platform of all three participating states since 1999, the ministries responsible for which signed a joint memorandum in 2001. As part of this trilateral cooperation, the Distelverein was also awarded the Ramsar Wetland Conservation Award in 2002, alongside the Slovak Institute Daphne , the Czech Institute Veronica and the WWF .

The association has not been operational since 2009.

Members

In addition to the four sponsors who act as full members of the association, other natural and legal persons can also be sponsoring members. The club magazine Gstettn , which appears twice a year, is also used for this , which means something like unused land and its vegetation.
