Dschiwan Gasparjan ( Armenian Ջիվան Գասպարյան in scientific transliteration Jivan Gasparyan, in other transcriptions Djivan Gasparian12. October 1928 , SOLAG , Armenian SSR ; † 6. July 2021 ) was an Armenian instrumentalist and composer.

Life

Gasparjan, who came from a village near Yerevan , was best known as a duduk player. He taught as a professor at the Yerevan Conservatory. His style ranged between traditional (Armenian) folk music and pop music.

He achieved worldwide fame through his collaboration with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack of the film The Last Temptation of Christ . Gasparjan later took part in the soundtrack of the film Gladiator . He has also worked with musicians such as Lionel Richie , Hans Zimmer , Brian May , Andreas Vollenweider , Majid Bekkas and Michael Brook .

In 2010 he played Duduk at the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo - as part of the Armenian contribution.
