In the summer of 2012, WBO signed Pirog to play his next title defense against Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam . Pirog decided to fight against WBA world champion Gennady Golovkin . Shortly afterwards, Pirog confirmed in an interview that the WBO world title had been stripped from him. However, the fight against Golowkin did not take place due to Pirog's back injury.
