Dmitry Konstantinovich Faddejew ( Russian Дмитрий Константинович Фаддеев ; born June 17, jul. / The 30th June  1907 greg. In Yukhnov ; † 20th October 1989 in Leningrad ) was a Soviet mathematician who with algebra employed.

life and work

Faddejew was the son of an engineer from Saint Petersburg and studied there from 1923. He was a student of Boris Delone (with whom he wrote a book on third degree irrational numbers). From 1932 he was at the Steklov Institute in Leningrad, and stayed in this department when the main institute moved to Moscow in 1934 . From 1944 until his death, he was also professor of higher algebra and number theory at the University of St. Petersburg and at times dean of the faculty of mathematics and mechanics and president of the St. Petersburg Mathematical Society .

He worked in various areas of algebra, including a. Galois theory , group theory , ring theory , algebraic number theory , Diophantine equations, and numerical linear algebra (where he was one of the world's leading experts). In addition to algebra, he also dealt with probability theory and mathematics didactics . He also endeavored to popularize mathematics in lectures and, for example, in several articles in the well-known popular Russian journal Quant .

Faddejew was a corresponding member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and recipient of the State Prize of the Soviet Union .

He had been married to Vera Faddejewa since 1930 , with whom he wrote a famous book on numerical linear algebra and with whom he had three children, a. a. the theoretical physicist Ludwig Faddejew .

He was the head of a great school. His doctoral students include Boris Wenkow , Alexander Skopin, Senon Borewitsch , Andrei Roiter, Mark Baschmakow, Anatoli Jakowlew.
