Dmitri Sergejewitsch Badin ( Russian Дмитрий Сергеевич Бадин ; born November 15, 1990 in Kursk ) is a Russian hacker . He is said to have broken into computer systems of several governments and international organizations on behalf of the military intelligence service GRU .

The FBI has been looking for Badin since 2018 on suspicion that he was responsible for the manipulation of the US presidential election in 2016 and an attack on the servers of the international anti-doping agency WADA .

The German federal prosecutor's office obtained an international arrest warrant against him at the beginning of May 2020 . He is said to be responsible for a hacker attack on the Bundestag in 2015. At least 16 gigabytes of data were captured, including from Chancellor Angela Merkel's parliamentary office . The Sofacy Group ("Fancy Bear"), of which Badin is said to be a member, is held responsible for this attack . The allegations against Badin are secret service agents and spying on data .

The international research platform Bellingcat confirmed Badin's birth dates and his work for unit 26165 of the military intelligence service GRU, which specializes in cryptography . His car was registered at the Moscow address of the secret service. The user accounts he used on Skype , vk.com as well as his email address and telephone number also confirmed these assumptions. According to this, Badin is probably the author of malware that was used, among other things, for the hacks of the MH-17 investigation team, the email server of the Democratic Party , the German Bundestag and Bellingcat itself. He used the pseudonym Scaramouche in his work .

Chancellor Angela Merkel called the findings in the Bundestag “outrageous” and reserved reactions to Russia. The FDP MP Manuel Höferlin called the process "an attack on our country".
