Dobrynja Nikititsch ( Russian Добрыня Никитич ) is a very popular in Russia literary figure of the Russian epic , the so-called Bylinen . In terms of her popularity she is comparable to German figures like Roland or Siegfried .

Dobrynja Nikititsch was a bogatyr and is best known as a dragon slayer . He is usually depicted in the epics as a servant at the court of Vladimir the Holy , who is closest to the prince and his family and who takes on a number of duties that are rejected by other knights. The first bylines to this literary figure go back to the time before the Mongol rule in Russia and describe a relative of Duke Vladimir. To what extent this figure was based on a historical model is unclear. The oldest epics on Dobrynja Nikitisch probably come from the Novgorod region .
