Dodenhusen (desert)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dodenhusen or Totenhausen is a desert west of Gieboldehausen in the district of Göttingen .

location

The desert site is about two kilometers west of Gieboldehausen in the Untereichsfeld between the Werxhäuser Berg and the Totenhäuser Graben, a small tributary to the Ellerbach.

history

The place was founded around 800 AD due to the name ending "-hausen". It was first mentioned as Dodonhuson in 1013. In other documents from the years 1016 (Doodohusen) and 1141 (Dodenh (usen)) it is not certain whether this is the local place. There are certain written mentions from the 13th century (1266, 1381, 1413).

In a stock register from 1782 about the income of those from Minnigerode around 1400, 23 residential or collecting yards are counted for the place. It is not known exactly when the residents left the place and settled in Gieboldehausen. Around 1600, reports were then made of the Totenhausen desert and the taxes to be paid on it.

The church in Totenhausen was consecrated in the name of "Cosmas and Damian". Even after the village was abandoned and the church fell into disrepair, the place was remembered. In 1682, a chapel (St. Bartholomew) and a wayside shrine were therefore probably built at the same place, and in 1884 the current chapel was built again.

Origin of name

The basic word is formed from -husen for building / house, the final word could be a shortened name "Dodo". Further derivations are controversial. With the desolation of the place, a reinterpretation of Totenhausen became common in the 17th century.

Dodenhäuser Chapel

The Kluskapelle , built in 1884, consists of half-timbering with filled compartments. It has been renovated and repaired several times over the past 100 years. A processional Madonna belongs to the chapel and was probably made in the 17th century. The chapel and the wayside shrine have been the destination of various processions over the past centuries. There are also some linden trees around the chapel.
