Doh Say Dat ( Trinidadian Creole for "Do not say that") is a board game that was designed in 2013 by Daniella Maraj and Allister Raghunanan. It uses the principle of taboo , allowing players to guess terms from the Trinidadian Creole, an English-based Creole language that is slang in Trinidad .

Idea and equipment

The concept of Doh Say Dat developed from taboo game nights in Trinidad, in which Maraj and Raghunanan participated and during which they observed that players also used formulations from the vocabulary of the Trinidadian Creole to give their fellow players hints on terms to search for. Overall, according to Maraj, Doh Say Dat is a mixture of taboo , jeopardy! , Charades and scattergories .

The outer packaging of the game is in the colors of the Trinidadian flag (black, white and red). It contains playing cards with terms from the Trinidadian Creole, the number of which is evenly distributed among the four categories "places", "phrases", "people" and "things". The age recommendation “from 18” is based on the fact that Doh Say Dat is suitable as a drinking game , which is pointed out in the instructions.

Game flow

The players are divided into at least two teams and determine how many rounds should be played; alternatively, you can play until all cards are used up. The teams take turns. A moderator outside of the active team is appointed for the respective game round, who monitors the game. The active team chooses a category, and a player on the team draws a suitable term card, which he lets the moderator see. The card owner then explains the term to be guessed to his team without using the key words noted on the card (and known to the moderator). The team has three attempts to guess the term they are looking for.

In the event that Doh Say Dat is to be used as a drinking game, the instructions recommend that as a rule, the team in turn must consume alcoholic drinks in the event of unsuccessful guessing attempts, and the opposing teams in the event of successful attempts.

reception

After the game was released in December 2013, it became the best-selling parlor game in Trinidad. It is no longer available; planned special editions with the subjects of sport and music were initially not implemented. The daily Newsday ruled that Doh Say Dat offers both community experience and fun and is a game "for us, made by us". The Guardian assessed that the game shows "how beautiful the Trini dialect is (...) (and) how rich our culture can be". In 2018, the special edition Doh Say Dat Music appeared with categories and terms relating to musical styles such as calypso , chutney , parang or soca that originated in Trinidad .
