Document logistics
The document logistics is the logistics part of document management . It brings together methods and tools that deal with the organization and control of the transport of documents in a company and thus contribute to the optimization of processes . In document logistics, no documents are created, but made available and archived.
history
The need to develop tools for transporting documents was recognized as early as the early 19th century. Compressed air-operated inner tube post systems characterized the equipment of large office buildings and administrations until the middle of the 20th century. In the Charité in Berlin , patient samples and documents are still transported using a modern pneumatic tube system. In everyday office life, the pneumatic tube system has mostly disappeared due to the high operating costs. Within the company, e-mail has made the delivery of paper-based documents largely superfluous.
Further development of document logistics
Although documents are now almost exclusively created on a computer, a letter is usually printed out at the workplace. It is still necessary to collect physically available documents in the company, since the preparation for the dispatch is usually organized centrally. For this reason, modern document logistics systems aim to print out documents centrally and only when necessary. This is usually done via a device driver that provides a virtual printer for the printing application. This avoids a media break. The digital print data stream can be transported within the company network and prepared for central printing and electronic archiving.
