Gallery tomb scheme

The Dolmen de la Crête (also called Allée couverte de la Cote 197 ) is a gallery tomb . It is located on a ridge , about east of Vautorte and Ernée in the Forêt de Mayenne, in the Mayenne department in France .

The east-west oriented chamber is about 9.6 meters long and 1.5 meters wide. Four preserved misshapen capstones rest (not in situ ) on the 11 supporting stones of the north and the eight stones of the south side. Access was from the eastern end, which is only a meter wide and even lower. At the western end there is a small antechamber. Some of the stones from the cairn have been preserved on the outside.

The Allée couverte was described by A. Faucon in 1893 in the bulletin of the Archaeological Commission of Mayenne. It was placed under protection in 1990. Despite the excavations and restoration work carried out by Roger Bouillon between 1984 and 1986, the Allée couverte was heavily overgrown.
