The Dolmen de la Verdoline located in Saint-Vallier de Thiey , in Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

description

The approximately 1.9 × 1.5 m measuring almost rectangular chamber consists of five slabs that leave an approximately 2.5 m long uncovered paved access in the southwest, which is formed on the sides from dry masonry and bordered towards the chamber by a broken half-high stone block becomes. The base of this threshold brick is lower than the corridor of the entrance, so that it allows a relatively high opening. The two long side panels of the west-east oriented chamber (with access in the west) weigh more than 1.5 tons. The intact capstone lies on the hill, which is about ten meters in diameter. On the sketch made by Alexis Mossa in 1880, the access cannot be recognized, so that it was buried. The front view shows the cover plate that appears to be on the monument in 1880.

Finds

According to Cotte, the bodies were placed on either side of a partition formed from flat stones in a stool position. The information about the grave goods found is unclear. A drawing by Bottin shows disc-shaped and tubular pearls , a cylinder of bone, a perforated lunula made of slate ( French pendeloque arquée ), as also shown by statue menhirs , and a striking shard.

The archaeological material (human bones and gifts) is in the Museum of Art and History of Provence.
