Caranda dolmen

The Dolmen of Caranda (also Carauda) west of Cierges dates from the Neolithic Age and is (next to the dolmen La Pierre Laye ) one of the few monuments of this type in the Aisne department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

The Dolmen de Caranda, discovered in 1851, is a short, approximately east-west facing, recessed megalithic complex of the gallery grave type, the walls of which are made of eleven stone slabs. It is about 5.0 meters long and 2.0 meters wide and high. The dolmen, excavated in 1872, is accompanied by a short ante and closed by a locking stone that leans against two lateral front panels and is covered with large, slightly inclined panels.

It is the main monument of the approximately 3.0 hectare Lhommée necropolis.

It was classified as a Monument historique in 1889 .
