Lapeyrière dolmen

The rectangular Dolmen of Lapeyrière is surrounded by trees at the end of a field. It can be seen in winter from the country road that leads from Grèzes to Brengues in the Lot department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

It was excavated and re-erected in 1965 by Jean Clottes, who realized that the dolmen had been exposed several times before. Material from the Copper Age and ceramics from the Middle Bronze Age were recovered. It is likely that the original contents were removed as early as the Middle Bronze Age, and the site was excavated during the Roman era and later.

The capstone measures around 4.30 × 2.40 × 0.55 m today. The block behind the dolmen may have been part of the capstone in the past. The burial mound has a diameter of 14 m. It is closed in the west by dry stone walls against a further accumulation of rubble on the south side from previous excavations or from rock that had been cleared from the field. The dolmen is on private property and cannot be reached via public roads.
