Peygros dolmen

The dolmen of Peygros (also called dolmen of Bourigaille ) is located southwest of Mons in the east of the Var department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

It is a small north-south oriented dolmen in a round cairn about 12.0 m in diameter. The chamber is about 1.8 m long and 1.6 m wide. It is limited in the north by a 2.3 m long and 1.6 m high head plate. The headstock bears bowls ( French cupules ). On the south side, a 1.7 m long and 0.92 m high slab rests on the rock. A dry stone wall delimits the north side. Two approximately 2.0 m high and 1.0 m wide orthostats frame the 0.4 m wide entrance, in front of which are the remains of an approximately 1.0 m wide corridor.

The chamber was examined in 1908 by Mizaël Edouard Edmond de Pas (1866–1941) and in 1972 by Gérard Sauzade. The excavations revealed numerous broken and burned human bones and more than 1,700 human teeth. The other finds consist of two flint tips and olive-green pearls , a green barrel, six bone buttons with V-shaped holes, two green rock rings, two pendants from boar tusks, clamshell pendants, a gold tip, two bronze rings and various bronze fragments as well as shards made of coarse ceramic. All finds come from the bearers of the bell beaker culture and are deposited in the Museum of Grasse.

Nearby is the Riens dolmen .
