Dolomite, tailored is the name of a sculpture by the artist Ulrich Rückriem that was created for the first Skulptur.Projekte , which was held from July 3 to November 13, 1977 in Münster , Westphalia . It delimits the so-called Jesuit walkway next to the Petrikirche , which is close to the Domplatz in apark belongingto the Westphalian Wilhelms University between the Fürstenberghaus, the legal and catholic-theological faculty, on the Munster Aa .

sculpture

The sculpture consists of nine wedge-shaped stone blanks made of Anröchter dolomite , which were processed in the Anröchter natural stone company Schulte. Strictly speaking, this rock is not a dolomite rock , but rather a sedimentary limestone from the Turon ( Upper Cretaceous ), which is comparatively sensitive to weathering. The stones lined up along the footpath reach a height of 3.3 meters. Their order in the work of art does not correspond to the original order in the quarry. The depth of the sculpture is 1.2 meters.

The 7.2 meter long sculpture has a vertical, smooth wall on the inside facing the path, the outside is beveled and natural. The shape takes up the buttresses on the opposite church wall. A square room is enclosed towards the church, so that the viewer feels “wedged in” as it were.

criticism

Rückriem's work of art met with harsh criticism in the run-up to the sculpture.Projekte 1977 . This was triggered by a letter from Josef Pieper to the editor . The Christian philosopher said that he had never met anyone "who would have called THAT (!) A work of art". Rückriem felt hurt by the extent of the rejection and the aggressiveness that met him and his work. He threatened to pull the stones off.

background

Rückriem's dolomite was the first work that was completed for the Skulptur.Projekte Münster in 1977 . The artist puts his income in connection with the production and installation of the sculpture at 3,000 DM for one and a half years of work. The Sculpture.Projects have been taking place in Münster every ten years since 1977.

After the exhibition ended, there was initially no buyer for the dolomite . When the art association's appeal for donations only generated a good ten percent of the required 70,000 DM, the stones were dismantled in January 1981. To the Sculpture.Projects 1987 they returned to their original location. The sculpture is now owned by the city of Münster.
