St. Petri , also Petrikirche , is a Catholic church in Münster . As a former Jesuit church, the Petrikirche is the nucleus of the University of Münster . It is located not far from the cathedral on the university grounds between the Fürstenberghaus, the legal and Catholic theological faculty on the Aa and today serves as the church of the Catholic student and university community of Münster (KSHG) and as the school church of the Paulinum grammar school . Because of the good acoustics, the church is the preferred space for religious concerts ; In addition, the Petrikirche is highly valued as a wedding church.

The church is owned by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

History and architecture

The Petrikirche was built between 1590 and 1597 as the church of the Münster Jesuit College . It was the first Jesuit church in the Rhenish order province . The architect and site manager was Johann Roßkott .

St. Petri is an east - facing three-aisled basilica without a transept. The building material is red brick for the wall surfaces ( quarry stone in the west up to about five meters above the ground ) and light sandstone for the structural elements. Two slender bell towers flank the choir . Inside, the aisles are divided into two floors by galleries . Access to these is provided by a low stair tower on the north and south sides. The overall look of the building is more horizontal than vertical .

In terms of style, St. Petri stands between Gothic and Renaissance . While the basic structure of the basilica and the buttresses look backwards, the windows show mixed forms and the portals show pure Renaissance ornamentation.

Next to the church on Jesuitenweg there is the sculpture Dolomite, cut by the artist Ulrich Rückriem . The nine vertically positioned stones made of Anröchter dolomite form a counterpart to the buttresses of the church wall. The work, which was at first heavily criticized, was created for the Skulptur.Projekte in 1977 and is now owned by the city of Münster.

In August 2019 it became known that the Petrikirche had to be renovated . Two years earlier, construction fences were set up around the church to secure it. The church has been closed since December 2019 due to damage to the vault. After the closure, the Catholic student and university community complained that the responsible building and property company in North Rhine-Westphalia had been aware of the state of the interior in need of renovation for 6 years. The costs for the external renovation will probably amount to 1.5 to two million euros .
