Dominic Benhura (* 1968 in Murewa ) is an artist from Zimbabwe . He gained international fame as a sculptor .

Dominic Benhura grew up with his mother without a father in Murewa. There he attended elementary school with good results. Thereupon his uncle Sekuru Gutsa took him to Tafara , a suburb of Harare , where he could attend a high school and came into contact with sculpture. In his artistic development he was influenced here by his cousin Tapfuma Gutsa , a well-known sculptor in the country. In his youth he worked at the Chapungu Sculpture Park in Harare, which is part of the Chapungu Sculpture Center .

His artistic development is linked to a wide variety of motifs. Among his works are plants, trees, reptiles, animals and compositions that express emotions without a human face. His sculptural work lies in the traditions of Shona sculptures . This is based on the processing of some regionally occurring silicate rocks ( soapstone , serpentinite , green schist facies ), which are sometimes referred to as verdite in southern Africa .

He had international appearances at workshops in Australia , Botswana , Belgium , Denmark , Germany , the Netherlands and in the United States .

Dominic Benhura works with natural stone and metal and is a well-known artist in Zimbabwe who is now also involved in training young talent. On December 27, 2007 he took over the management of the Tengenenge Art Community from its founder Tom Blomefield .
