Dominique Foata (born October 12, 1934 in Damascus ) is a French mathematician who deals with enumerative combinatorics and probability theory.

Foata 1973

Foata received his doctorate from Marcel-Paul Schützenberger at the University of Paris in 1965 ( Etude algébrique de certains Zonen-Analymes d'Analyse Combinatoire et du Calcul des Probabilités ). He was a professor at the University of Strasbourg (IRMA).

Among other things, he dealt with the combinatorics of special functions and with statistics of permutations.

In 1983 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Warsaw ( Combinatoire des identitées sur les polynomes orthogonaux ). In 1985 he received the Science Prize of the Union des Assurances de Paris and in 1985 the Prix Paul Doistau-Émile Blutet .

With Volker Strehl and Adalbert Kerber he founded the Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire.
