The "Domino Sparrow" in the Rotterdam Natural History Museum

The "Domino-Spatz" (Dutch Dominomus ) was a house sparrow ( collared sparrow ), which in the run-up to Domino Day in 2005 let a total of 23,000 stones tip over. After failed attempts to catch him alive, he was shot and later exhibited in a museum.

incident

The "Domino Day 2005" broadcast by RTL was set as a world record attempt in which over four million dominoes were set up. The sparrow was in the hall in the Frisian Expo Center (FEC) in Leeuwarden on November 14, 2005 (a Monday)flew and had unexpectedly knocked over 23,000 stones. However, introduced barriers prevented them from falling over. The television broadcast for the world record attempt with 4.3 million dominoes was announced for four days later (Friday, November 19). According to an RTL spokesman, a company specializing in animal trapping was unable to catch the sparrow within an hour. The "now completely exhausted and frightened animal" was therefore shot by a hunter. The Dutch animal welfare organization "Dierenbescherming" then switched on the police; the hunter received death threats as a result. Krista van Velzen from the left-wing Socialist Partij asked parliamentary questions about the incident. The shooting of the sparrow was reported via AP . also known in the United States via USA Today . The shooter who shot the animal with an air rifle was fined 200 euros because the sparrow was a representative of a species protected in the Netherlands.

Afterlife

One month after the production of "Domino Day 2005" it became known that the sparrow was to be preserved and exhibited in the Rotterdam Natural History Museum, Rotterdam , on a box of domino stones. This project was implemented and the sparrow was part of an exhibition about the house sparrow (from November 2006 to May 2007) and then part of the exhibition "Dode Dieren met een Verhaal" ( German  dead animals with a story ). De Volkskrant later said he was a "crowd puller" .
