Don Giovanni (Karajan 1985)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Don Giovanni is a DDD complete recording of the opera Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Italian. It was created in January 1985 at Deutsche Grammophon under the musical direction of Herbert von Karajan in the Berlin Philharmonic with Samuel Ramey as Don Giovanni, Anna Tomowa-Sintow as Donna Anna, Agnes Baltsa as Elvira, Kathleen Battle as Zerlina, Gösta Winbergh , Ferruccio Furlanetto , Alexander Malta and Paata Burchuladze together with the Berlin Philharmonic and the choir of the Deutsche Oper Berlin . In 1986 it was also released on CD.

reception

The response to the recording varied greatly: some critics regarded it as one of the most important opera recordings of the 1980s, which may have been due to the fact that this recording was one of the few noise-free complete recordings available in the early days of the CD. Karajan's conducting and the performance of some soloists were heavily criticized by Heinz Josef Herbort and others: Elvira was a bad cast. The elegant Don Giovanni lacks passion. The implementation is too smooth, too sublime and viscous. Kathleen Battle's lyrical soprano in the role of Zerlina is praised.
