Paata Burtschuladze ( Georgian პაატა ბურჭულაძე ; in English transcription Burchuladze ; born February 12, 1955 in Tbilisi , Georgian SSR ) is a Georgian opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Burtschuladze received singing training from the singing teacher Olimpi Chelashvili in Tbilisi. He sang for opera and ballet at the State Sakari-Paliashvili Theater while still a student . Because of his special talent, he received a scholarship that enabled him to continue and complete his training in Milan with Giulietta Simionato and Eduardo Mueller.

Careers and Awards

In 1981 he won first prize at the Voci Verdiane singing competition in Busseto , Italy . In 1982 he won the gold medal and first prize at the prestigious Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition . In 1985 he won the Luciano Pavarotti Competition in Philadelphia , USA .

He made his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London as Ramphis in Aida alongside Luciano Pavarotti as Radames. Further debut appearances followed at La Scala in Milan and the Vienna State Opera Luisa Miller , again alongside Pavarotti. Herbert von Karajan , who described the artist as the "second Chaliapin " , brought him to the Salzburg Festival , where he has since performed several times in concerts. Another high point in Burtschuladse's career was his appearance as the title character in Boris Godunow in the opening performance of the Metropolitan Opera in the 1990/91 season.

repertoire

Burtschuladse's repertoire includes, in addition to the great bass parts of Verdi, above all the Russian repertoire and the most important French bass roles. He also has a large repertoire of songs by Russian composers.
