Donald I.
Donald I. MacAlpin ( Domnall mac Ailpín; * around 812; † 863 ) was King of Scotland from 859 to 863.
Donald succeeded his brother Kenneth I. During his brief tenure, he created a set of laws known as the Laws of Aedh , which also included the Tanistry tradition. According to this custom, the heir to the throne of the king was elected among the oldest and most worthy of his clan during his tenure. As Donald's successor, his nephew Constantine I was elected, who was to ascend the throne after his death. The tanistry custom was used until the reign of Malcolm II .
The circumstances surrounding Donald's death in 863 remain unclear. He either died during a battle near the village of Scone in Perthshire or peacefully in his palace at Kinn Belachoir . Donald I had one child, Giric (Gregory), who ruled together with Eochaid from 878 to 889. He was buried on Iona .
