Donald Joyce Borror

Donald Joyce Borror (born August 24, 1907 in Ohio , † April 28, 1988 ) was an American entomologist , bioacoustic specialist and ornithologist .

Donald J. Borror graduated from Ohio State University and received his Masters in 1930 and PhD in 1935 . He taught there until his retirement in 1977. Here he also founded the Borror Laboratory of Bioacoustics , which is now home to around 33,000 recordings. Of these, 86 percent were made by Borror, who became one of the first bioacoustics after buying his first recording device in 1947. In particular, he devoted himself to the sounds of birds. But he also recorded sounds from insects.

In entomology he was particularly concerned with dragonflies . He wrote several identification books and in 1942 the most comprehensive study of the genus Erythrodiplax to date .
