Donald R. Davis (economist)
Donald Ray Davis (* 1956 ) is an American economist and university professor .
Career, research and teaching
Davis first studied at the University of California, Berkeley , which he left in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy. In 1989 he graduated with a Master of Arts in economics from Columbia University , from which he received a Ph.D. completed his studies.
After graduating, Davis moved to Harvard University in 1992 . Initially he was an assistant professor there , and from 1996 he was an associate professor at the school. In 1999 he moved to Columbia University , where he took over the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Chair in 2007 .
Davis focuses on international trade, economic geography , urban economics, and economic development in an open economy . He achieved particular fame, especially together with David Weinstein, with publications on foreign trade theory . With the developed of them Heckscher-Ohlin-Ricardo model , an extension of the Ricardian and Heckscher-Ohlin model , the intra-industry trade account, they show that not only as in the Krugman model of Paul Krugman increasing returns produce foreign trade, but constant returns too. The model explains that countries with identical production factors are already trading due to different technologies, as this drives specialization and thus trade.
