Donald Stokes

Donald Gresham Stokes, Baron Stokes (March 22, 1914 - July 21, 2008 ) was a British industrialist.

Career

Stokes began his career as a trainee with Leyland Motors in 1930 and (with a break for military service from 1939 to 1945) had a successful career with the company until he was appointed Chairman and Managing Director of British Leyland Motor Corporation Ltd (BL) in 1968, a challenging role in public opinion at the time.

In 1977 Michael Edwardes was named chief executive, but Stokes remained until 1979. In 1969 he was promoted to life peer as Baron Stokes , of Leyland in the County Palatine of Lancaster . At the time of his death, he was the second oldest member of the House of Lords . There he was a crossbencher .
