Danube cities is the overall name that emerged in the 15th century for the five cities , which are only partially located on the Danube , quantities , Munderkingen , Riedlingen , Saulgau and Waldsee . The name was given to these cities, which were founded in the 13th and 14th centuries. Century fell to the empire of the Habsburgs and were counted to Front Austria , awarded by the Austrian chancellery at the time. Without being formally free of empire , they had their own administration with considerable freedom. In 1384/86 Duke Leopold III pledged from Habsburg the Danube cities to the Truchsessen von Waldburg . In 1680, the Danube cities were able to free themselves from the pledge on their own and submitted to Austria against the promise that they would not be pledged again. Now they belonged to Swabian Austria for a little longer than a century and came to Württemberg in 1805/06 .
