life and career

Donna Anderson was born to Wenona Hanly-Knaflich and Louis-John Knaflich in a small town in Colorado, but grew up in California since she was eight. Together with her sister, she received dance lessons at an early age and eventually appeared in a traveling dance group. During an appearance, the film director and producer Stanley Kramer became aware of Anderson, whereupon he took her under contract and arranged acting classes for her. She made her film debut in 1959 in Kramer's film The Last Shore in a larger role as the wife of a naval officer played by Anthony Perkins . Perhaps its most famous role was in the following year, also under Kramer's direction, in the film drama Inherit the Wind alongside Spencer Tracy , Fredric March and Gene Kelly . For her appearance in Wer den Wind sät she received a nomination for the Laurel Award for Best Young Actress .

However, Anderson was unable to build on the success of her first two films. She had a recurring role as a pioneer woman in the western series The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters in 1963 and 1964, alongside a young Kurt Russell who became known through the series. She then took on guest roles in a few well-known television series, most recently in an episode of Murder is Her Hobby in 1984 . In the early 1970s, she was treasurer of the American National Theater & Academy . Donna Anderson was married to the actor and writer Sumner Williams (1930-1994), a nephew of the director Nicholas Ray . In the recent past she occasionally gave information about her acting work in interviews.
