Hallische Strasse, which is doubled in stone

Double petrification: unknown elsewhere

The double petrified Hällische Strasse is a cultural monument between Heilbronn and Weinsberg . It is an approximately 1.7 km long section of an old long-distance trade route that connects Schwäbisch Hall and Heilbronn; the name comes from the landmark book of the city of Heilbronn. Around 1840 the street was called Alte Haller Straße . The road avoids the valleys and runs largely on the ridges of the hills; it is believed that it goes back to prehistoric times and was a royal road in the high Middle Ages .

The road meets Heilbronn territory on the northeast slope of the Reisberg and from there forms the boundary to Weinsberg over a length of about 2 km. Numerous springs of the Weinsberger Stadtsee and Brühlbach emerge on the northern slope of the mountain, and landslides occur again and again, which in the course of history has led to the road slowly shifting south. In order to mark the border more clearly, Heilbronn pushed for a “double petrification”, that is, on opposing boundary stones on both sides of the street. This is the special feature and is not known from any other street in Germany.

Today the road is somewhat hidden in the forest on the Reisberg; it has been replaced by a new, higher lane just a few meters away. Only the (not ubiquitous) cut into the terrain and the double boundary stones reveal the former road, which is increasingly overgrown and can only be explored on foot. Of the twenty stone pairs that were once twenty, some of which date back to the 16th century and all of which were still there in 1970, some have since disappeared, while others were significantly damaged or overturned. In 2003 the remaining stones were checked, straightened and, if necessary, replaced by the city of Heilbronn; meanwhile (as of 2006) some stones have fallen over again.
