history

The founding date of the church, which is often given as 1241, is not confirmed. On the east, south and north sides, field stones can still be found today, which are cut in a rectangular shape and walled up in rows and suggest a construction period from 1250 to 1300. However, the first documentary mention dates from 1346. In 1376, the place was mentioned in connection with the first proven feudal lords. Knights from the von Queiß family received the villages of Dahmsdorf and Wendisch Rietz as a fief. The building has been reshaped several times. A crucial renovation / z. T. Reconstruction of the church was carried out at the beginning of the 18th century. At this point in time, the church received the half-timbered tower and a false ceiling was installed inside. The church building was thoroughly renovated from 2009 to 2011 with state, church and private funding and donations. To increase the stability of the masonry, the facade was given a layer of plastering sludge. After a certain time, the view of the field stones is released again.

architecture

The hall church has rectangular foundation walls with a length of 17 meters and a width of 10 meters, it was originally 1 m longer and also had a nave-wide and 7.40 m deep westwork. In the Middle Ages, the church was one of the medium to large churches. The three narrow lancet windows in the east gable and the two low, pointed arched stone portals on the south side date from the construction period. The eastern portal is smaller; it is the priest's gate. Remains of a sacristy extension can still be seen on the north side . The windows on the long sides are later openings (around 1875). In 1719 it received the new lattice tower that is still visible today. In it hang two bronze bells from the previous tower, the smaller one from the 13th century, the larger one was cast in 1400 for the previous tower. The writing "Dahmsdorf" scratched on the bell mantle is related to the obligation to deliver during the Second World War . The bell survived. The church was dedicated to St. Thomas in the pre-Reformation period .

Furnishing

The pulpit, the rear gallery and the stalls date from the 18th century. The pulpit, which was originally part of a pulpit altar, has stood on the brick floor to the right of the altar since 1962. The altar table, made of field stones and plastered, has a reliquary on the south side, which was uncovered during the renovation. The baptismal font (sandstone) was donated by the family of the lock master from Wendisch Rietz in 1885. In the church there are pre-Reformation paintings and prayer sayings on the entire inner east wall. The paintings are visible above the false ceiling and have been plastered over below the ceiling since 1962.

location

The building is in the center of the village. Two remaining tombstones are evidence of a cemetery that once surrounded the church. A newer cemetery was created in the immediate vicinity of the church. The hills surrounding the church are striking and striking. For a long time the opinion was held that this was a Slavic castle wall. According to recent geological investigations, however, it is a dune body .
