The Forbidden Island is a cooperative board game by the American game designer Matt Leacock and was published in 2010 as Forbidden Island by the American game publisher Gamewright . In the same year it was awarded the Mensa Select as one of 5 games . The game was translated into various languages (Spanish, Dutch, French, Russian, German) and was published in German in 2010 by Schmidt Spiele . In 2011 it was nominated for Game of the Year and the Dutch Game Award, as well as the Spanish Juego del Año Game Award.

Style of play

The Forbidden Island is a cooperative game, which means that all players play together and can only win or lose together. The other players slip into the role of adventurers who try to recover four artifacts from a sinking island. If you manage to find all the artifacts and escape in time by helicopter, you have won the game. If you fail and the island sinks into the water before you have been able to retrieve all the artifacts or before you can leave the island together, you lose the game.

In addition to the instructions, the game material consists of:

  • 24 island fields
  • 58 playing cards, of which
    • 28 artifact cards (also contain the special cards "The tide is rising", helicopter cards and sandbag cards)
    • 24 flood cards
    • 6 adventurer cards
  • six pawns
  • four artifacts
  • a water level with a water level indicator

Game flow

Possible actions per turn
  • Moving adventurers
  • Dry out the island fields
  • Give artifact cards to another player
  • find an artifact

Maps are used to determine which parts of the island sink into the sea and when. The downfall can be counteracted by working together with the adventurers and by bringing in the respective special functions. At the beginning of the game it is up to the other players which level of difficulty they choose. The lower the water level is chosen at the beginning, the higher the chances of winning the game. Since it cannot be prevented that more and more parts sink into the floods, it must be ensured that at least the important parts, as the center of the island (for short connecting routes), an artifact location and the helicopter landing area , can be saved. Functional island parts on the edge of the island can sink into the sea without significantly affecting the game.

Version differences

In contrast to the English edition, the German edition contains painted plastic figures instead of colored wooden pawns. The graphics on the character cards have also been changed. Furthermore, the German version of the game comes in a normal cardboard box, while the English version comes in a tin can.
