Fischbeck village church

The evangelical village church Fischbeck is a Romanesque brick church in the district Fischbeck of the municipality Wust-Fischbeck in the district of Stendal in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish of Fischbeck in the parish of Jerichow in the Stendal parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

History and architecture

The church in Fischbeck was built from brick in the years 1220–1250 in late Romanesque and early Gothic forms . The nave and the west transverse tower are the same width. The exterior is structured with a circumferential base, pilaster strips and serrated friezes. Three pointed arch windows are from the (first) construction period.

Around 1500, a three-sided late Gothic choir was added in a not quite so high wall quality made of broken stone and bricks , which deviates significantly to the north in the axis. It was probably in this context that older windows were also changed to have pointed arches or wicker arches. The west portal, which is stepped several times, can be part of the initial design or it can be a modification.

The tower gables were built in half-timbered construction in 1780 and, like the nave, have a tiled gable roof.

Inside the church is flat-roofed and shows a round triumphal arch . The choir was vaulted, as indicated by arches and templates in the polygon sides. The connection between tower and ship was originally established through three arched openings that are now walled up. The three portals on the western front and on the flanks of the ship have a blunt ogival shape and sit in rectangular wall templates. On the western front there is a walled-in round window above the portal. The new late Gothic choir is attributed to the increased space requirement, because the predecessor choir, which was probably of high quality, is unlikely to deteriorate. But it can also have aesthetic reasons: in the Romanesque style period, polygonal choir closings were not yet common; a renewal of the choir in Gothic forms is therefore often found in existing Romanesque buildings in Germany and the Netherlands.

Since 1997, many parts of the church have been repaired, including the church clock, the choir pillar, the roof, the base and the entrance doors.

Furnishing

The richly decorated altarpiece from around 1400 shows saints under tracery arches in the shrine Maria as well as on the sides and in the wings . There is a small late Gothic crucifix above the shrine. In a painting of the predella from the second half of the 16th century, the handkerchief of Veronica is shown. On the west and north walls there are galleries from the end of the 17th century. The west gallery bears a painting depicting Jesus and the twelve disciples with the call to mission . The pulpit, which is roughly the same age, is also decorated with paintings and rests on a fluted column. A tombstone from 1287 with a circumferential inscription and the depiction of the deceased couple as an incised drawing is used as an altar plate. The organ has a brochure in the forms of Art Deco from the first quarter of the 20th century.
