Groß Ballerstedt village church

The Protestant village church Groß Ballerstedt is a late Romanesque field stone church in the Ballerstedt district of Osterburg (Altmark) in the Stendal district in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish of Groß Ballerstedt in the Osterburg parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

History and architecture

The village church Groß Ballerstedt is a characteristic example of a late Romanesque village church of the four-part type from the first half of the 13th century, consisting of a rectangular tower the width of the ship, the nave, the retracted choir and the apse . Buttresses were added to the tower and apse at the beginning of the 18th century. Restorations were carried out in 1958 and 1992/94. In the last-mentioned restoration, the German Foundation for Monument Protection took part in the restoration of the external cracks and the damaged tower masonry. The southern portal, two walled-up windows in the west and a window in the apse are Romanesque. The sound openingsin the tower are slightly ogival shape. The other rectangular windows in the nave and choir were created in this form at the beginning of the 19th century. The flat-roofed interior is separated from the choir by a triumphal arch .

Furnishing

A baroque altarpiece from 1721 forms the main part of the furnishings. It shows a shrine -like structure having blasted gable and Akanthuswangen with a gilded crucifix in the main draw. The motif of the seven apocalyptic candlesticks that crown the gable is unusual. The pulpit, which is also baroque, was built in 1729. The masonry, stucco-covered baptismal font was created in the late Romanesque era. An altar crucifix from 1715 comes from the church in Calberwisch . A tombstone for Pastor Joachim Möller († 1629) was placed in front of the altar. A wooden offering box and a sacrament niche from the Middle Ages are also preserved.
