history

The church in historical representation

The original church of St. Georgius in Grootschermer collapsed in 1612 during a heavy storm , as did the church in Schermerhorn . On June 15, 1762 the foundation stone of today's church was laid, for the construction of 5000 guilders by the states of Holland and West Friesland. It was the five-year-old David Leonard van der Hammen, son of the preacher at the time, who laid the foundation stone. He later followed his father in office. The following year, 1763, the church was consecrated. From 1978 to 1980 a general restoration took place in the course of which, among other things, the original colors were restored and the clockwork was also renovated. Today the church is only used for special occasions such as weddings for religious purposes. Exhibitions take place here regularly.

description

Today's church is a typical Protestant Reformation building, based on a rectangle without interruptions. Pulpit, baptismal font and benches are aligned perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the room. Most of the furniture comes from the earlier church, the weathercock and the bell from 1648. The bell bears the old Schermers coat of arms with the mole and two pikes. The grave slabs in the church also come from the previous building. It is wheelchair accessible and can accommodate 170 visitors.

The tower clock on the east side is larger than the one on the west side. This against the background that it should also be clearly visible when working in the polders to the east.

The organ

The organ

The organ dates from 1864 by the organ builder F. Naber from Deventer . It has 7 voices and has 550 metal and wood pipes. It was also restored between 1978 and 1980, which was carried out by the company Vermeulen from Alkmaar .
