The Schönau Church

The Schönau village church is the Evangelical Lutheran church in the Schönau district of the Wutha-Farnroda community in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

location

The Schönau church stands on a hill next to the former schoolhouse in the middle of the historic town center with a bakery and parsonage.

history

Today's church is the third church building in the town. The first late Romanesque church built on the Kirchwiese near the Hörsel , which was repeatedly damaged by floods, was abandoned. The second, half-timbered church was only granted a short lifespan. It suffered damage from storms and the Thirty Years' War and was demolished. With donations, the pastor David Pistorius (1603–1690) was used in 1689 to build the church, which has been preserved to this day and is made of local natural stone and corresponds to the village scene.

In the 20th century a morgue was added and a window behind the altar was bricked up. In 1989/90 the interior of the church was renovated on the occasion of its 300th anniversary.

Furnishing

Inside the church, on the south wall, there is the tombstone of David Pistorius, the initiator of the church building. A baptismal font adorns the church next to the pulpit. The rectangular windows, doors, galleries, chairs, pulpit and baptismal font are made of wood. The baptismal font and other components of the furnishings were taken over from the previous churches. The interior has been kept in warm red tones since the renovation in 1989/90.

With the implementation of the planned demolition of the morgue, an opening of the walled up altar window is planned. For its design, the parish announced a design competition in which the design "The Good Shepherd" by the artist Gert Weber won . When the window is installed, the interior will be converted and benches and a gallery removed.

Parish

Schönau forms a common parish with the neighboring village of Kälberfeld and the district of Deubach .
