The village church of St. Nicolai is the Protestant church in the Schmölln district of the municipality of Hummelshain in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia . It belongs to the parish Kahla Hummelshain in Kirchenkreis Eisenberg of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

The church , located within the cemetery, rises up on a small hill in the middle of the village, visible from afar.

history

The current late Gothic appearance of the 12th century church can be traced back to renovation work in 1518, as uncovered wall paintings dated 1500 on the galleries show. The ornaments on the gallery parapet and the front wall of the chairs are stencils of Art Nouveau . Under the layer of paint in the ceiling area of the choir was as ceiling paintings , the Lamb of God with seven seals, surrounded by four Evangelists exposed.

In 1990 the church was reopened.
