Schmölln is a district of the municipality of Hummelshain in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia .
Geography and geology
Coming from Kahla you will find the hamlet of Schmölln on the left just before Hummelshain in a small basin 300 m above sea level in an extensive forest area. The surrounding area belongs to the Saale-Elster sandstone slab and belongs to the Upper and Middle Buntsandstein. The plateau around the place is heavily cropped. The road 1100 from Kahla to Neustadt / Orla , which runs past the site by around 500 m, is very busy. Neighboring places are south Langenorla , west Freienorla and Kleineutersdorf and north the city Kahla and the village Lindig .
history
The first documentary mention of Schmölln was registered on January 16, 1194. The name of the hamlet is borrowed from the Sorbian language ("smola": bad luck). In the past, fields around Schmölln were farmed and fodder to feed themselves. Today the areas are mainly used for fodder production as pastures and meadows. The natural environment is of particular interest to hunters and hikers. The village church of Schmölln dates from the 12th century .
