The Liebau village center is a memorial on the former inner-German border . It is located in the extreme south of Thuringia in the district of Sonneberg (on the Föritz district ) only a few dozen meters from the Thuringian-Bavarian border.

history

The place Liebau was first mentioned in 1317 . From 1952 it was in the exclusion zone created by the GDR authorities , which was to mean the end for the village. In the same year, the villagers fled to Bavaria as a group and thus avoided being deported . In 1975 the houses in the village were completely demolished on the orders of the SED government. Today a memorial plaque, surrounded by fields and a motocross practice track, reminds of the old village.
