The Dornier S-Ray 007 is a two-seat amphibious aircraft from Dornier Technologie from Uhldingen-Mühlhofen .

development

The concept is similar to that of the Dornier dragonfly from the 1920s. Originally, the aircraft should also be called Dornier Libelle, but the naming rights belong to EADS as the successor to Dornier-Werke . The aircraft was renamed to Dornier Stingray (English for stingray). Again for legal reasons, the aircraft had to be renamed a second time before the first flight and is now officially called the Dornier S-Ray 007 . The initiator and client of the project is Iren Dornier , grandson of Claude Dornier and owner of Dornier Technologie GmbH. The company has nothing in common with the former Dornier works in Friedrichshafen, but many designers from the former Dornier works are involved in the project with the corresponding know-how.

As is typical for Dornier flying boats, the S-Ray 007 therefore has no support floats on the surfaces, but only small stubs on the hull. The flying boat is a high-wing aircraft, with the one-piece wing with the engine and propeller in the middle connected to the fuselage via a stable, aerodynamically shaped central support (pylon). This design made it possible to install the electrically operated take-off / landing flaps over almost the entire width of the wing and to mount the wing rotatable by 90 °, which simplifies the transport of the aircraft, but above all enables the S-Ray 007 to be space-saving in one To park in port or on board ships. The S-Ray 007 is made of fiber-reinforced plastics (GRP, partly with CFRP reinforcements), which makes the flying boat very resistant to salt water. It is equipped with a retractable undercarriage and two tanks of 75 liters each.

First flight and flight testing

The maiden flight of the Dornier S-Ray 007 took place on July 14, 2007 at Friedrichshafen Airport . The test pilot was Gerhard Thalhammer. In the days before, a water test was carried out on Lake Constance . Gerhard Thalhammer will also conduct the other flights as part of the flight tests.
