Dorothea Gotfurt

Dorothea Gotfurt (born Dorothea Frank, February 12, 1907 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ; died unknown) was a German-British translator.

Life

Dorothea Frank was a daughter of the Halle doctor Alfred Frank (1874–). She was an actress and divorced as Dorothea Berliner when she married the writer Fritz Gottfurcht .

After the handover of power to the National Socialists in 1933, both emigrated to France and in 1935 to Great Britain. Both were expatriated from the German Reich in 1939 . At first they could not find work in London, and she made a living as a seamstress and glove maker. With her small tailor shop, she managed to get orders from fashion designer Norman Hartnell . When Fritz Gottfurcht found a regular job as a screenwriter, she also devoted herself to writing. They Anglicized their family name to Gotfurt.

Dorothea Gotfurt translated German literature into English and English literature into German. She wrote plays that were performed in London: Of Mink And Men in 1962 and No Other Way in 1965. In 1963 she was commissioned to write the script for an episode of the BBC television series "Suspense".

Gotfurt published a bilingual volume of German cabaret songs, which she translated herself. For the title, she translated the refrain from Klabund's poem Ich baumle mit de Beene as While I'm Sitting on the Fence . She transferred Klabund's song from the milieu of Berlin backyards to the Soho district of London .

Gotfurt translated novels and detective novels by Agatha Christie , Robin Maugham , Dorothy L. Sayers , Upton Sinclair and Una Troy , as well as plays by Noël Coward and Ted Willis into German. She was a member of the German PEN Club in Exile .
