The yolk weaver ( Ploceus vitellinus ), also called yolk yellow weaver , is a species of bird from the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae). The species, which is very peaceful in keeping and soon becomes very trusting, is occasionally kept as an ornamental bird in Europe.
description
The yolk weaver reaches a body length of 14 centimeters. The male's beak and face are black. The neck and throat show partly rust-colored spots. The wings and the tail are gray to black. The female is much more simply colored and has olive-green-yellow and blackish longitudinal stripes on top.
The yolk weaver usually does not form large breeding colonies . The nest is oval; it has no entry tube. The clutch consists of two to three eggs.
The distribution area of the yolk weaver extends from Senegal across the African continent to southern Ethiopia , to Somalia and northern Tanzania . The habitat is the thorn bush savannah . Outside the breeding season, it can often be seen in larger flocks.
