Douglas Bodle

Douglas Bodle (born August 7, 1923 in Winnipeg ) is a Canadian organist, pianist, harpsichordist and music teacher.

Bodle studied with Bernard Naylor , Gwendda Owen Davies (piano), Greta Kraus (harpsichord) and Hugh Bancroft (organ). From 1959 he taught at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He was from 1963 to 1966 and again from 1969 organist and choirmaster of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church , for which he commissioned Walter Buczynski's Mass with Outside Prayers , and in 1969 took over the same function at the Holy Blossom Temple .

From 1966 to 1968 he taught at the University of Manitoba and was also a member of the Manitoba University Consort . Until 1989 he taught piano, harpsichord and organ as a member of the Music Faculty of the University of Toronto . Until 2007 he continued teaching part-time as Professor of Oratorio , as well as his organist activities at St. Andre's and the Holy Blossom Temple. His students included John Derksen , Donald Hadfield and Peter McCoppin (organ), Audrey Cooke Belyea , John Kruspe and R. Murray Schafer (piano) and numerous singers.

As an organist and harpsichordist, Bodle has performed in Canada and many cities in Europe and the USA. He has appeared with the CBC as a soloist and member of the St Andrew's Consort , accompanied instrumental soloists , the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Festival Singers , performed chamber music works with the York Winds and Toronto Chamber Winds and worked as a pianist with the CBC Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra . In the 1980s he made three recordings for children: Mr Bach Comes to Call , Beethoven Liveds Upstairs and Mozart's Magic Fantasy .
