Douglas Francis Jerrold (* 1893 ; † 1964 ) was a British newspaper publisher.

Life

Jerrold was from 1931 publisher of the magazine The English Review , founded by Ford Madox Ford in 1906 , member of Friends of National Spain , the Anglo-German Fellowship , soldier and civil servant. Jerrold was a descendant of Douglas William Jerrold , one of the founders of Punch (magazine) . The group around the The English Review made lobbying for corporatism in British politics. In late 1933 she supported George Lloyd, 1st Baron Lloyd, in his attempt to overthrow the government of Ramsay MacDonald and Stanley Baldwin . 50 to 60 MPs showed interest in this attempt, which culminated in a dinner by The english review chaired by Edward Carson on November 21, 1933. 350 ate with dinner. After dinner, Jerrold published his views on the dictatorship in the UK:

“There is no folly more fashionable be than the saying that the English will never tolerate a dictatorship. Under contitutional forms of a very flimsy character the English have invariably insisted on being governed either by a close oligarchy or a virtual dictatorship [...] It is because the party machines have notably failed to govern that they are losing the public confindence, and unless Parliament under universal franchise can fulfill the indispensable task of leadership, a dictatorship is not only inevitalbe but necessary. "

- Douglas Jerrold, Current comments, English Rewiew, December 1933, cited from

Jerrold wrote that there was no greater fashionable stupidity than to say that the English would not tolerate dictatorship. Under a thin constitution, the English would always have insisted on being ruled either by a small oligarchy or a virtual dictatorship. This is so because the party machinery has conspicuously failed to govern, which is why they have lost public confidence, and as long as parliament does not fulfill the indispensable role of leadership, a dictatorship is not only inevitable but necessary.
