Vital-Justin Grandin OMI (born February 8, 1829 in Saint-Pierre-sur-Orthe , † June 3, 1902 in St. Albert) was a French-Canadian religious and first bishop of Saint-Albert .

Life

In 1851 Vital Grandin entered the novitiate of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary . His wish to be deployed in the foreign missions was initially not fulfilled. He received the sacrament of ordination on April 23, 1854 and was sent to the diocese of Saint-Boniface in Canada a little later . Here he was committed to proclaiming the gospel among the indigenous people of Canada, initially in the mission on the shores of Lake Athabasca .

On December 11, 1857, Pope Pius IX appointed him . the Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Saint-Boniface and titular bishop of Satala in Armenia . On 30 November 1859 he donated superior general of his congregation, Eugene de Mazenod , in Marseille , the episcopal ordination . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Fréjus , Joseph-Antoine-Henri Jordany , and the auxiliary bishop of Marseille, Jacques Jeancard OMI.

Back in Canada he devoted himself again to the mission among the indigenous people, especially at Lac Île-à-la-Crosse . When the huge diocese was divided into several vicariats, he became Bishop of Saint-Albert, today's Archdiocese of Edmonton . He was still tirelessly active in pastoral care, building churches, monasteries, schools and hospitals.

On June 3, 1902, he died in a reputation for holiness. In the beatification process he was awarded the heroic degree of virtue , so for beatification only proof of a miracle is necessary.
