Henri Jordany (born September 18, 1798 in Puimoisson , † October 25, 1887 in Riez ) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop .

life and career

The priest

Joseph-Antoine-Henri Jordany came from the area of ​​Riez ( Alpes-de-Haute-Provence , Diocese of Digne ). He attended the seminary in Digne and was ordained a priest in 1821. After 34 years of experience in office, he rose to become Bishop of Fréjus in 1855 at the age of 57 .

In 1858 he had the crypt with the relics of St. Mary Magdalene in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume restored and in 1859 promoted the repopulation of the Dominican monastery there . In 1859 he bought the island of Saint-Honorat in front of Cannes for the diocese, together with the ruins of the Lérins Abbey , where he first settled the Frères agricoles de Saint-François d'Assise founded by Gabriel Deshayes in 1841 , and from 1861 that of Charles Fissiaux (1806–1867 ) founded Congrégation de saint-Pierre-aux-Liens , which was dedicated to the reintegration of young offenders, and finally in 1869 the Cistercian congregation of Marie-Bernard Barnouin , whom he knew from her daughter Ségriès and which is still in Lérins today.

In 1865 he founded one of the first diocesan magazines in France, La Semaine religieuse du diocèse de Fréjus , which was published until 1959. When Toulon was struck again in 1865 by a cholera epidemic that also cost priests their lives, he made a personal contribution to the city. In 1870 he took part in the First Vatican Council . As a supporter of the Syllabus of Pius X he was there also a strong supporter of papal infallibility and defender of the Papal States .

Retirement and death

In 1876 he resigned from his position for reasons of age and retired in his home country. He died in Riez in 1887 at the age of 89 and was buried in the former cathedral in Riez.

Motto and honors

Jordany's episcopal motto was: In verbo tuo laxabo rete . (At your word, I'll cast the nets). He was a Knight of the Legion of Honor .
