The Dourine ( Dourine ) is a venereal disease of the horse . It is one of the notifiable animal diseases .

After an incubation period of 2 to 26 weeks, the clinical symptoms , edema and ulcers , appear on the genital mucosa, which later become unpigmented scars .

Trypanosoma equiperdum

Caused by Trypanosoma equiperdum , the Dourine is a classic cover infection that is only significant in Southeastern and Eastern Europe today. The transmission takes place exclusively during mating or through artificial semen transmission.

A therapy is currently not possible. Affected animals must be killed according to the animal disease legislation in Germany on the instructions of the official veterinarian. Equidae may only be imported from other European countries with negative antibody results. In Austria, sick animals, suspected of being infected or suspected of being contagious, are not allowed to be occupied, mares may not be used for breeding even after they have healed, but must be marked with the letters BK on the left side of the neck (Section 37 TSG ).
