Dovilai

Dovilai ( German  Dawillen ) is a small town (according to miestelis) in the Lithuanian district of Klaipėda . The place is the center of the administrative district (Seniūnija) Dovilai and belongs to the Rajong municipality Klaipėda .

location

Dovilai is located in western Lithuania, in the former Prussian Lithuania , about 12 km east of Klaipėda (Memel). The town of Gargždai is located four kilometers northeast of Dovilai . National road 227 runs through the village from Klaipėda to Laugaliai village on national road 228 . The Lašiupis (Leszuppe), a right tributary of the Minija, flows through Dovilai .

Place name

The name says that someone wants a land allotment or loan. Nehrungskurisch “davin” = present, Lithuanian “dovis” = donation.

history

Dovilai was founded before 1540. In 1785 it was referred to as a "melirted village". Since 1872 the place was the seat of an administrative district in the Memel district . Until 1919 it belonged to the Prussian province of East Prussia and thus to the German Reich , it was separated from the latter due to the Treaty of Versailles and annexed to Lithuania in 1923 as part of the Memelland . Returned to the German Reich in 1939, Dovilai came to the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1945 and became the seat of a district (lit. apylinkė). Since 1995 the place has (again) been the seat of an administrative district and received a coat of arms as such in 2009.
