The Dr. Theodor Neubauer Medal was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The medal was donated on August 20, 1959 in three stages. It was awarded both to individuals and to collectives for extraordinary merits in building up the socialist education system in the GDR, as well as for outstanding results in socialist education and upbringing, in particular for special merits in the development of pedagogical sciences and in consolidating the Interaction between family and school. The award also takes place for many years of successful work as elected parent representatives. Nevertheless, the award of the medal was limited annually. From 1974 onwards:

  • I. grade in gold
    • for individuals: 65 times
    • for collectives: 25 times
  • II. Grade in silver
    • for individuals: 110 times
    • for collectives: 85 times
  • III. Stage in bronze
    • for individuals: 475 times
    • for collectives: 155 times

There was a monetary award associated with the award of the medal. In addition, every entrusted person, even if he was a member of an excellent collective, received the medal and award certificate. Incidentally, the medal could be awarded several times, even at the same level.

Appearance and wearing style

The bronze , silver-plated or gold-plated medal with a diameter of 30 mm shows in the center of its obverse the head of Theodor Neubauer , seen from the left, and a branch of laurel underneath. His portrait is framed by the semicircular inscription DR. THEODOR NEUBAUER . The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows the small state coat of arms of the GDR in the center, which is framed by the inscription: DEUTSCHE.DEMOKRATISCHE.REPUBLIK . The medal was initially worn on the right, and from 1978 on the left upper side of the chest on a 25 mm × 11 mm white clasp, in the middle of which a 6 mm wide, black, red and gold central stripe was woven. From 1971 onwards, a miniature of the GDR Medal of Merit was also placed on the tape at the level awarded.
