Drasteria cailino is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

The wingspan of the moth is 30 to 42 millimeters. On the upper side of the forewings there is an alternation of different colored regions. The basal region is black-brown, the disk region towards the root initially ocher to pink and then merges into a dark brown area that is gray on the outside. The hem is dark brown. The kidney flaws stand out in a very large ocher color and usually have a strongly jagged line inside. Ring and tenon flaws are not visible, transverse lines are often indistinct. The hind wings are white and provided with a wide black-brown band in the border area. In this there is sometimes a whitish spot near the inner corner. The discal patch is crescent-shaped, but is missing in some specimens. The fringes shimmer silky white and are interrupted by a short dark area roughly in the middle.

Similar species

Drasteria picta shows an overall darker appearance and differs by a narrow, dark band in the middle field of the hind wings, which runs through the discal patch and extends to the front edge.

distribution and habitat

The distribution of the species extends across southern Europe along the Mediterranean and east to Asia Minor , the Middle East , southwest Russia and Kazakhstan . It is also found in Central Asia . The closely related species Drasteria philippina lives in the Canary Islands and North Africa . Drasteria cailino is mainly found in warm river valleys, on steppe meadows and on xerothermal mountain slopes.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths fly in two generations from May to July and in autumn. You visit artificial light sources. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the basket willow ( Salix viminalis ).
