Draupadi Murmu, sat. ᱫᱨᱚᱣᱯᱚᱫᱤ ᱢᱩᱨᱢᱩ (born June 20, 1958) is an Indian politician from the Santhal ethnic group , who has been the governor of Jharkhand since 2015 . She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Life and Political Work

Draupadi Murmu graduated from RD Women's College in Bhubaneswar in 1979. Before entering politics, she worked, among other things, as a public service teacher. Her political career began in 1997 when she was elected to the Rairangpur Council . In the same year she became Vice President of the Scheduled Tribes Morcha of the BJP in Odisha. From 2000 to 2004 she was a member of the Rairangpur Legislative Assembly and held two ministerial offices in succession in Odisha . From 2010 to April 2015, she was district president of Mayurbhanj . On May 18, 2015, Draupadi Murmu was appointed to the post of governor of Jharkhand as the first woman . She became the successor to Syed Ahmed . Draupadi Murmu is known for her commitment to social issues.

In 2007 Draupadi Murmu received the Nilakantha Award from the Legislative Assembly of Odisha. In 2017 Draupadi Murmu was under discussion as a possible candidate for the presidency in India .
